With the price of bitcoin falling heavily since the end of 2021, crypto enthusiasts might be after an asset they can physically hold.

Enter the ‘1 BTC’ number plate, which is now up for grabs for £325,000 from website Regtransfers.

If sold at that price, it would make it the 15th most expensive private registration plate sold in Britain, according to the DVLA registered supplier of personal car registrations and number plates.

In Britain, personalised number plates are now a £2billion industry – with many motorists attracted by investment potential, as well as vanity.

Motorists or investors could splash out on the ultimate crypto-aesthetic – and if history is anything to go by, it might not be the daftest investment opportunity.

For example, registration plate ‘F 1’ was sold in January 2008 to Afzal Kahn for £440,000. He is now believed to have put a £10million price tag on it.

Elsewhere, number plates ‘X 1’ and ‘G 1’ were sold for around £500,000 in 2011. According to Regtransfers, these could now be worth the region of £1million if sold.

There is no guarantee of course that they’d sell at that price, or that 1 BTC would grow in value.

If you are still looking to get into the crypto number plate game, you could splurge around £60,000 instead and opt for a traditional style number plate, such as ‘MR11 BTC’.

And, for those on a budget, you can still get your own crypto, BTC number plates from as little as £150.

Last year the number plate ‘BTC 500X’ sold for £51,510, or the equivalent of 1.6 bitcoin at the time, or 3.2 BTC today.

The most expensive car registration plate in the UK is ’25 0′, which was bought for £518,480 bought by Ferrari dealer John Collins in 2014.

The reg plate now sits on a Ferrari 250 SWB once owned by rock star Eric Clapton, and is now estimated to be worth up to £750,000.

Unusual themes for private car registration plates are not uncommon.

Last year the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency moved to ban Covid-19-related personalised number plates over fears they could be deemed offensive.

But, the industry is seeing more evidence of motorists using private number plates as investment opportunities.

While the vast majority of number plates purchases are for fun: including popular words or numbers such as ‘boss’, or ‘007’, or combining numbers and letters, such as ‘P3 7ER’, ‘D4 VID’, ‘B35T’ or ‘FA57’.

But, a number of buyers have started purchasing their private registrations with the intention of selling later at a profit, taking the investment as seriously as stocks and shares.
Currently, 1 bitcoin is worth just under $20,000. In November 2021 it reached $63,000 a coin.

Quentin Willson, a former Top Gear presenter, is famously quoted as saying that a good personal registration could be ‘better than money in the bank’.

It’s not clear whether it is better than crypto in the wallet.
