It is a discretionary payment of credit, worth up to £250, for those struggling with energy costs.

That means it’s up to British Gas to decide who gets the help, and not everyone on a prepayment meter will be eligible.

But some customers are only just realising that they have been selected by the supplier to get the support.

Posting in the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group, one British Gas customer said: “I’ve just had this email thinking it was too good to be true.

“It isn’t – I just checked my meter and got £100. That’s me not having to pay gas over the summer.”

Along with the post, she posted a screenshot of an email she received from British Gas saying £100 had been credited to her account.

Many other social media users also commented to say they had recently received the support.

One person wrote: “I was wondering why I had over £100 on my electric last Thursday! Only just got the email.”

While another added: “We are with British Gas and ours went on last week.”

British Gas said the £10million fund has already helped more than 50,000 prepayment meter customers.

The payments are one-off and will continue to be paid until the pot of funding has been used up.

The supplier said that while it expects the funding to run out by the end of June, there is no firm cut-off date.

Customers don’t need to contact the company to apply for the help.

The credit will be added to eligible customers’ prepayment meters.

Energy suppliers also offer plenty of energy grants and schemes to help you out if you’re struggling.

Here’s a list of schemes open right now:

  • British Gas Energy Trust
  • EDF Customer Support Fund
  • E.ON and E.ON Next Grants
  • Octopus Energy Assist Fund
  • OVO Energy
  • Scottish Power Hardship Fund

There’s a one-off fuel voucher from your energy supplier if you’re on a prepayment meter.

Councils are also dishing out hundreds of pounds to hard-up families through the Household Support Fund.
