We’ve rounded up three big Wi-Fi drains below.

SMART SPEAKERS

Smart speakers usually rely on Bluetooth to connect to your devices.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use similar radio frequencies, so this can result in disruption to either of them.

The competing frequencies interfere with each other and slow down your speed.

Other smart devices can leave you with the same problem.

In general, too many smart home gadgets on one network can really slow it down.

BABY MONITORS

The same problem can happen with baby monitors that also emit signals which interfere with your router.

Baby monitors emit radio waves that can interfere with your Wi-Fi connection.

It’s worth moving them, especially if they’re set to the same frequency as your router.

MICROWAVES

The kitchen is full of Wi-Fi speed stoppers so it’s not the best room to put your Wi-Fi router.

If you have to have it in there, try and keep it away from your microwave.

Microwave ovens use electromagnetic waves around the same frequency as some Wi-Fi routers.

The devices are designed to keep most of the waves in, but can experience leakage.

This isn’t said to be harmful to you but can interfere with your Wi-Fi.
