WHEN it comes to speeding up your Wi-Fi router there’s a gadget that can be both a blessing and a curse.

If you don’t use it correctly, you could end up ruining your internet experience rather than saving it.

The gadget in question is a wireless repeater.

Generally, people buy these to improve their Wi-Fi at home but setting them up wrong can have the opposite effect.

Microsoft highlighted this flaw on its website.

The tech giant explained: “Wireless repeaters are handy devices that rebroadcast a wireless signal, strengthening the signal from your router to other floors or the opposite side of a building.

“You can place one anywhere there’s an outlet, but look for locations that are halfway between your router, modem, or access point and your device.

“Research these products before investing in one. Some wireless repeaters can be difficult to configure and can drag down your network’s performance.”

Sometimes a Wi-Fi repeater can end up throttling your network and slowing speeds to certain devices.

You can check with your internet service provider if you’re worried about buying the wrong one.

The position of a wireless repeater is also very important.

If you put it too far away from the original router or next to the wrong materials then you won’t get your money’s worth from the device.

Putting a repeater near concrete or metal can reduce the Wi-Fi signals it can receive and send out.

Before purchasing a wireless repeater, try getting the most out of your original router first.

GOOD WI-FI ROUTER PRACTICES

Update your router software as regularly as possible so you have all the latest security features and any bugs can be fixed.

Make sure you add a strong password to avoid strangers jumping on your network and draining your speed.

Generally, you need to put your Wi-Fi router central and in an open area that’s raised off the ground.

Always make sure your router is plugged into the master socket rather than an extension cable so it works faster.
