There are two triangles that you might see in an official Apple pop-up.

Both will feature a yellow triangle with a blue droplet of water.

The first will sport the headline: “Charging Not Available.”

This will appear if you connect your iPhone to a charger and liquid is detected.

There’s a second warning that appears if you try to connect a different accessory that isn’t a charger.

It will have the headline: “Liquid Detected In Lightning Connector”.

Both advise that you disconnect the cable or accessory and allow it to dry.

Apple notes: “This may take several hours.”

It’s possible to override the warning and charge anyway, but be very careful.

This should only be used as an option in emergencies.

“If you charge your iPhone while the Lightning port is wet, the pins on the Lightning port or the cable can corrode and cause permanent damage or stop functioning, causing connectivity issues for your iPhone or accessory,” Apple warns.

How to dry your iPhone

According to Apple, the best technique is to tap your iPhone gently against your hand with the Lightning port facing down.

Then leave your iPhone to dry somewhere with airflow.

You’ll want to wait at least 30 minutes before trying to charge again.

If you still see the alert, it means liquid remains in the port.

Leave it in a dry area with airflow for up to a day, as Apple warns “it might take up to 24 hours to fully dry”.

Importantly, Apple says that there are some tricks you should never try.

For instance, you must avoid using an external heat source or compressed air to dry it out.

And you shouldn’t insert foreign objects into the connector, including cotton swabs or paper towels.

Additionally, the iPhone maker also urges against placing your handset in a bag of rice.

It’s a common myth that rice will dry your iPhone more effectively, but Apple warned: “Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.”
