People are just realising five ‘connection killer’ mistakes that make Wi-Fi worse from your garden over the hot weekend

BRITS are flocking to their gardens to take advantage of the hot weather.

And chances are you have at least one gadget with you – probably an iPhone or Android phone.

But even those with smaller gardens may have noticed how weak – or non-existent – the Wi-Fi connection becomes when outside.

Phil Haslam, TalkTalk’s Tech Chief, has revealed five important tips with The Sun.

“Our gardens are an extension of the home, so there’s no reason they shouldn’t be connected,” he explains.

“With the right set up you can extend your Wi-Fi outdoors and enjoy streaming, swiping and surfing al fresco”

Prepare

To avoid disappointment, test the reach of your Wi-Fi ahead of a BBQ or garden party to avoid any hiccups.

Simply head outdoors with a connected device and make note of any Wi-Fi blank spots. 

Reposition your router

Experiment with the position of your router to help extend the range of your Wi-Fi coverage.

To get the most out of your router place it on a flat, open surface off the floor.

Reduce signal interference

Microwaves, ovens, cordless phones or other large electronic devices can interfere with your connection, so it’s best to keep your router away from them if you can.

Disconnect Wi-Fi devices you’re not using

Having lots of devices such as tablets, laptops and phones connected to the Wi-Fi at once uses up more of your bandwidth.

Try disconnecting the devices from the Wi-Fi when you’re not using them to free up your connection.

Try a mesh network

If you have a particularly large garden, then it might be worth investing in a mesh system – aka extenders.
