China’s leading electric-vehicle battery maker put on hold plans to announce its first North American plant as political fallout from U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan further complicates business tied to the world’s two biggest economies.

Tesla-supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology was aiming to announce a plan as early as this month for a plant in North America after considering sites in the U.S. and Mexico, people familiar with the matter said. But it decided to hold off over concerns that making such an announcement as the U.S.-China tensions rise would draw public criticism, they said.
