Ordinary investors have ploughed more than £1 million into a tiny mining company called Cornish Tin to finance a detailed exploration for metals next year.
Cornwall is seeing a revival of its previously world-famous mining industry, which reached its peak in the 19th century and was immortalised in Winston Graham’s Poldark series of books.
The county has large deposits of critical green metals tin and lithium.
More than 1,600 investors used the Crowdcube website to back Cornish Tin. Crowdfunding is a risky way to invest. The original plan was to raise £400,000 but the target has been more than doubled.
Cornish Tin, set up in 2017, is small compared with other companies working in the area such as Cornish Lithium and Cornish Metals.

A first exploration drilling project was started by Cornish Tin last year and a second is planned.
The company says it has already secured a further £400,000 alongside the crowdfunding, which closes tomorrow.
