O2 customers with an iPhone are to receive a brand new button inside iMessage that can help tackle phishing scams.

iPhone owners will be given the option to set up a ‘report junk’ feature on their devices that they can report suspected scams with.

The new feature takes just minutes to set up.

Virgin Media O2 is the first UK operator to roll out such a feature for iPhone users.

“We’re making it quicker and easier than ever for customers to fight back against fraudsters,” a spokesperson for O2 said.

“Our latest anti-fraud tool gives customers the option to quickly report texts and block fraudulent numbers to help everyone stay safe.”

Customers previously had to forward suspicious texts and calls to 7726 if they wanted to report them.

The network provider has already stopped 60 million texts from even reaching customers this year, the spokesperson added.

Once enabled, the button will let iPhone users report scam texts in just two clicks when they receive a message from someone outside of their contact book.

The company also uses the texts itself to improve its mobile security technology.

To unlock the new feature, customers will need to download Apple’s new operating system iOS 17.

Customers using older versions of iOS or other devices will have to rely on O2’s standard reporting system of forwarding texts and calls to 7726.

How to update iPhone

Updating your iPhone is very easy.

Simply open up Settings > General > Software Update.

You’ll be able to see if there are any updates waiting to be downloaded and installed.

The latest update as of October 4 is iOS 17.0.2.

If you’re already on that then you will already have access to the new button.

But it will only appear if you receive a message from someone outside of your trusted contacts.
