Mendelsohn was diagnosed with Follicular Lymphoma, which is incurable blood cancer, on November 16, 2016. She was shocked due to the diagnosis as she was fit and healthy and wasn’t ill.
The only sign that something was different was a small lump in her groin which was the size of a pea; she knew about the tumors that had been spread throughout her body when she was sent for a scan.
People were surprised when they heard she had cancer because she didn’t look ill. Follicular Lymphoma cancer is also known as invisible cancer; unlike other cancers, the treatment won’t start immediately.
She started her treatment 18 months after being diagnosed but sadly, her cancer had grown under the kidney, and the doctors thought that the treatment would result in kidney failure. Later she underwent six months of chemotherapy and 18 months of immunotherapy. The treatment had put her into remission; the doctors call it no evidence of disease.
This type of cancer is slow-growing, so the patients can go long without treatments or have long gaps between treatments.
When she was diagnosed with cancer, she was open with her co-workers and even spoke openly in public during World Cancer Day. She mentioned that when she made the announcement to raise awareness toward the public regarding the disease.
