IF you’re hoping to save a bit of cash with Netflix’s new cheaper subscription you might want to check the device you’re using first.

It turns out the streaming giant’s Basic with ads tier doesn’t work on a few popular products.

Older Google Chromecast kit doesn’t support it – only the most recent Chromecast with Google TV model does.

And Apple TV owners are out of luck too – for now at least, as 9to5Mac claims support will come soon.

Perhaps less surprising, PlayStation 3 doesn’t have access to it either.

It’s not clear why these devices can’t handle the new subscription, but probably has something to do with how ads are served.

Adverts are the major big change, allowing people to access Netflix for a new low price of £4.99 / $6.99.

The company says there are about four minutes of adverts every hour.

Recent testing by The Sun actually found the ads to not be all that frequent.

But there are other limitations on Basic with ads, such as fewer shows and movies available.

Everything from comedy classics like Happy Gilmore and Bean’s Holiday, to hit US series Suits and House of Cards are blocked.

Netflix warned at launch that some stuff might not be available to watch with the Basic with ads plan because of “licensing restrictions”.

The firm tends to hide locked titles from view on its main screen, unless one is in the top ten.

People are more likely to get a nasty surprise when searching for something – especially if they’ve downgraded from another subscription tier and know that title to be on Netflix.

This means users miss out on current top ten hits Minions and More 2, Sing and Motherland.

Another big difference is you can only get a maximum of 720p video quality, as well as only being able to use the account to watch from one screen at a time.
