NATIONWIDE bank payments are down as customers are left without wages just days before Christmas.

As many as 167 reports have been made on Downdetector so far, with problems occurring since 7am today.

Over half of those problems are to do with transfers of funds, as 53% have reported that to be the root of what they are struggling with this morning.

The building society has said it can’t accept payments into accounts from outside of Nationwide itself at the moment, but it’s left customers angry and concerned.

They have made desperate pleas with the provider to get things back up and running as they “really need use of the money today”, exclaiming how “absolutely ridiculous” the situation is for cash-strapped Brits.

The issues have left them without cash just as there is under a week to go before the big day.

It’s typically a period when shoppers will be frantically buying last minute gifts, and households will be stocking up groceries at the supermarket in time for December 25, so the outage could not have hit at a worse time.

Mum-of-two Amy Davies said: “I’m expecting my wages to go in today – I’m down to my last £4 and I’m waiting for my money so I can do the food shop and my Christmas shopping.”

The 38-year-old first noticed the problem when she checked her app to see if she’d been paid this morning and found an error message stating that all payments were delayed.

“I’m fuming,” she said.

She called customer services and was told she’d have to go into a branch to withdraw cash.

She said: “It’s the 21st of December, I’ve got two children, what am I meant to do? It’s just not good enough.”

It was only last week that angry Brits were met with the same worries as Halifax and Lloyds Bank went down leaving hundreds of customers struggling to make payments with just as little time before Christmas.

This time around, frustrated customers have taken to Twitter to air their concerns too.

One said: “I am awaiting a payment. It has been sent. How long is this expected to last? Today is my only day to do my final shop before Christmas. Terrible timing no?”

Another said: “It’s the last day to order my son’s stuff to be delivered by Christmas… I have until 12pm this afternoon.. MY MONEY BETTER BE IN MY ACCOUNT BY THEN.”

Another added: “It’s not good enough. Your payments system goes down every other week. I need to send these payments THIS MORNING.”

Meanwhile one said: “How can you possibly excuse no payments going in or out 4 days before Xmas! Inexcusable! You’ll be losing me as a customer once Xmas is out of the way!! Nationwide are a joke!”

On Twitter the building society responded to the worried and outraged customers.

A representative said: “The team are working hard to resolve this ASAP. We don’t currently have a timeframe for when this will be resolved.”
