After weeks of silence and worry, NASA has finally heard Voyager 2 come back to life. 

Communication with the unmanned probe was lost on July 21 when controllers accidentally sent a wrong command that tilted its antenna away from Earth – NASA only revealed the issue Friday.

The American Space Agency’s Deep Space Network, made up of giant radio antennas across the globe, picked up a ‘heartbeat signal’ Tuesday, meaning the 46-year-old craft is again operating. 

Engineers are now working on a command to point Voyager 2 back toward Earth. 

Voyager 2, which launched in August 1977 to study the outer planets – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune – is more than 12 billion miles from Earth.

NASA admitted in a blog post that the antenna error on July 21 caused the ‘communications pause.’

Even though the spacecraft’s antenna shifted a mere two percent, the agency said it was enough to cut contact. 

‘Engineers will now try to send Voyager 2 a command to point itself back at Earth,’ Jet Propulsion Laboratory tweeted Tuesday.

‘If that does not work, we’ll have to wait until October, when the spacecraft’s onboard software automatically tells it to reset its direction.’

Project manager Suzanne Dodd told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the news ‘buoyed’ spirits.

If the command doesn’t work — and controllers doubt it will — they’ll have to wait until October for an automatic spacecraft reset. 

‘That is a long time to wait, so we’ll try sending up commands several times’ before then,’ Dobb shared.

But now approaching half a century in age, Voyager 2 is in the latter stages of its life – and NASA has been reducing its capabilities to conserve energy.

The probe is expected to keep transmitting weak radio messages until at least the mid-2020s. 

Deep Space Station 43 is part of NASA’s Deep Space Network and the only antenna on Earth that can send commands to Voyager 2.

But at more than 12 billion miles away, it takes more than 18 hours for a response signal from Voyager 2 to reach Earth. 

The probe’s twin spacecraft, Voyager 1, launched the same year and is around 15 billion miles away, making it officially humanity’s most distant spacecraft, and it continues to operate normally.

Voyager 2 is programmed to reset its orientation several times each year to keep its antenna pointing at Earth. 

The next reset will occur on October 15, which JPL said should enable communication to resume if it hasn’t already. 

Engineers expect the Voyager 2 mission to ‘continue for years to come’ even though one of its five science instruments is being turned off in 2026.

Voyager 2 has begun using a small reservoir of backup power to help keep those instruments operating despite a diminishing power supply.

‘The science data that the Voyagers are returning gets more valuable the farther away from the sun they go, so we are definitely interested in keeping as many science instruments operating for as long as possible,’ said Linda Spilker, Voyager’s project scientist at JPL. 

Voyager 2 launched in 1977 to explore the outer planets, just a couple of weeks ahead of its identical twin, Voyager 1. 

Since then, it became the only spacecraft to have visited all four gas giant planets in our solar system – Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

In 1986, the Voyager 2 spacecraft made the closest approach to Uranus and discovered previously unknown moons in the process.

It has also found evidence of oceans beneath the icy crusts of Europa and Enceladus, two moons of Jupiter and Saturn. 

Voyager 2 and its twin are still the only spacecraft ever to operate outside the heliosphere, the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the sun. 

Voyager 1 is famous for returning one of the most revered astronomical images of all time – Pale Blue Dot, showing our planet as a spec of dust in the vastness of space. 

THE BACKGROUND TO NASA’S HISTORIC VOYAGER MISSION

The Voyager spacecraft were built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, which continues to operate both. 

NASA launched the Voyager 1 spacecraft on September 5 1977, and the Voyager 2 on August 20 1977.

Each spacecraft carries a golden record on board – a record that includes sounds, pictures and messages of Earth.

Continuing on their more than 37-year journey since their 1977 launches, they each are much farther away from Earth and the sun than Pluto. 

In August 2012, Voyager 1 made the historic entry into interstellar space, the region between stars, filled with material ejected by the death of nearby stars millions of years ago.

Voyager 2 entered interstellar space on November 5, 2018. 

Both spacecraft are still sending scientific information about their surroundings through the Deep Space Network, or DSN.

The primary mission was the exploration of Jupiter and Saturn. 

The mission was extended after making a string of discoveries there — such as active volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io and the intricacies of Saturn’s rings. 

Voyager 2 went on to explore Uranus and Neptune and is still the only spacecraft to have visited those outer planets. 

The adventurers’ current mission, the Voyager Interstellar Mission (VIM), will explore the outermost edge of the Sun’s domain — and beyond.
