A NASA probe containing “dangerous” asteroid dust has landed back on Earth after travelling in space for seven years.

The capsule carries about 250g of rocks and dust collected from the Bennu asteroid and Nasa thinks it could unlock the truth of our existence.

Bennu is said to be the most dangerous rock in the Solar System as its path gives it the highest probability of impacting Earth of any known asteroid.

Nasa confirmed the sample landed safely at the Utah Test and Training Range near Salt Lake City at 3.52pm today, three minutes ahead of schedule.

It was then checked for any damage and wrapped in thermal blanketing, before being recovered by helicopter using a cargo net.

The successful landing was met with a round of applause by scientists from the control room.

“This marks the US’s first sample return mission of its kind and will open a time capsule to the beginnings of our solar system,” the American space agency said.

The sample, collected as part of Nasa’s Osiris-Rex mission, is the US space agency’s first mission to collect a sample from an asteroid and the first by any agency since 2020.

Experts are now assessing the “dangerous” asteroid capsule as it could still be extremely hot and containing toxic gases.

Gas readings and samples of both the air and ground around the capsule continue to be taken, the BBC reports.

A parachute helped slow the descent of the sample and was seen at the landing site.

A quarter of the sample will be given to a group of more than 200 people from 38 globally distributed institutions, including a team of scientists from the University of Manchester and the Natural History Museum.

Nasa Administrator Bill Nelson thanked all of those involved in the mission.

“You designed it, you built it .. it’s the largest asteroid sample ever received on Earth [and] it shows that Nasa does big things,” he told the space agency’s special broadcast.

“Things that inspire us. Things that unite us. We are nothing without our knowledge.

“Thank you all who made this mission possible. It wasn’t mission impossible. The impossible became possible. Thank you all.”

Dr Sarah Crowther, research fellow in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester, said: “It was very exciting watching the Sample Return Capsule return, and a huge relief when it landed safely.

“I was watching multiple feeds at the same time! It seems like everything went as smoothly as we could have hoped. The capsule even conveniently landed near a road!”

Reacting to the landing, Queen musician Brian May, who aided the mission by helping to identify where Osiris-Rex could grab a sample from the asteroid, said: “This box when it is opened of material from the surface of Bennu can tell us untold secrets of the origins of the universe, the origins of our planet and the origins of life itself.

“What an incredibly exciting day.”

Asteroid Bennu is a 4.5-billion-year-old remnant of our early solar system and scientists believe it can help shed light on how planets formed and evolved.

Experts say the carbon-rich, near-Earth asteroid serves as a time capsule from the earliest history of the solar system.

It is anticipated the sample will provide important clues that could help us to understand the origin of organics and water that may have led to life on Earth.

Because the sample has been collected directly from the asteroid, there will be almost zero contamination.

Meteorites that fall to Earth are quickly contaminated from the second they make contact with our atmosphere. This means Bennu can give us an unspoiled glimpse into the past.

Ashley King, UKRI future leaders fellow, Natural History Museum, said: “Osiris-Rex spent over two years studying asteroid Bennu, finding evidence for organics and minerals chemically altered by water.

“These are crucial ingredients for understanding the formation of planets like Earth, so we’re delighted to be among the first researchers to study samples returned from Bennu.

“We think the Bennu samples might be similar in composition to the recent Winchcombe meteorite fall, but largely uncontaminated by the terrestrial environment and even more pristine.”

Dr Crowther earlier said on Friday: “It is a real honour to be selected to be part of the Osiris-Rex sample analysis team, working with some of the best scientists around the world.

“We’re excited to receive samples in the coming weeks and months, and to begin analysing them and see what secrets asteroid Bennu holds.

“A lot of our research focuses on meteorites and we can learn a lot about the history of the solar system from them.

“Meteorites get hot coming through Earth’s atmosphere and can sit on Earth for many years before they are found, so the local environment and weather can alter or even erase important information about their composition and history.

“Sample return missions like Osiris-Rex are vitally important because the returned samples are pristine, we know exactly which asteroid they come from and can be certain that they are never exposed to the atmosphere so that important information is retained.”

The spacecraft launched on September 8, 2016 and arrived at Bennu in December 2018.

After mapping the asteroid for almost two years, it collected a sample from the surface on October 20, 2020.

Astrophysicist Professor Boris Gansicke, department of physics, the University of Warwick, said: “The asteroids in our solar system contain the raw building blocks from which the Earth was made, so working out their composition will tell us a lot of how our planet formed.

“There are many open questions, for instance, where did the water that we have on Earth come from? And where did the ingredients that made life possible to develop come from?

“To answer those questions, ie measure the composition of an asteroid, you need to get your ‘hands’ on them (or in this case the arm of a space mission), and this is what Osiris-Rex achieved.

“In a nutshell, it’s similar to sitting in front of a delicious dinner and wanting to have the list of ingredients.”
