MyPillow Inc. sued voting-machine maker Dominion Voting Systems on Monday, a counter move after Dominion sued the bedding company and its Trump-supporting chief executive, Mike Lindell, for defamation over election-fraud claims.

MyPillow’s suit seeks more than $1.6 billion in damages.

In the complaint, the privately held company says that it is suing to protect free speech and to remedy harms that MyPillow says it has suffered.

“This lawsuit is brought in support of the marketplace of ideas and to remedy the grave harm that has been suffered by MyPillow as a result of Dominion’s suppression of speech and attacks on the Company,” the suit states.

MyPillow’s suit says there is a difference between statements made by Mr. Lindell and the company.

“In making these statements, Lindell spoke for himself, not MyPillow,” the suit says. “MyPillow has not engaged in discussion about the 2020 election. However, as an American company supporting American constitutional values, MyPillow unreservedly supports Lindell’s right to exercise his First Amendment freedoms concerning the matters of critical public concern, like election matters.”

Dominion representatives didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

In February, Denver-based Dominion sued MyPillow and Mr. Lindell in federal court in the District of Columbia. Dominion’s suit alleged that Mr. Lindell had defamed the company with accusations that it had rigged the 2020 election for President Biden, and Dominion asked for more than $1.3 billion in damages.

No court or election authority has found evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election. Recounts of paper ballots confirmed the election outcomes in multiple key states and counties. Former President Donald Trump’s campaign and its allies lost dozens of lawsuits seeking to challenge the results.
