Posting on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, Angela Howells-Owen said: “Popped into Morrisons yesterday to pick some coffee up (Nescafe Alta Rica) and got to the till and it scanned at £9.00.

“I obviously queried it and they said it was correct! Got a refund and went to Home Bargains.

“Just sharing in case any body else buys it as part of a big shop, I don’t always check.”

Indeed the coffee is priced at nearly a tenner on the Morrisons website.

The supermarket is charging customers £9 for a 190g jar of the Alta Rica instant coffer.

But that’s £3.50 more expensive than you can get at other supermarkets including Asda, Ocado, Tesco and Waitrose and Amazon, where you’ll pay £5.50.

The Morrisons price works out at £4.74 per 100g. It’s also selling a 90g jar for £4.75.

While it might look cheaper it actually works out pricier than the £9 jar as it costs £5 per 100g.

It just goes to show that you should pay close attention to the price per weight, rather than price alone.

In response to Ms Howells-Owen’s post, Aileen McCallum slammed the supermarket and said: “Morrisons is starting to take the p**s with their prices on just about everything.

“And I’m not talking about five to 10p. Sometimes it is quite a bit extra. Soon mounts up if you’re purchasing quite a few items.

“My dog’s food has gone up 60p in a couple of weeks, a Morrisons’ loaf from 45-89p. Then had the cheek to put it on offer at 85p. Although it’s my closest, I’m gonna start shopping elsewhere.”

Another customer said: “I stopped shopping there, I was a loyal customer for years. But cannot justify these insane prices.”

Morrisons said: “This is an unprecedented period of inflation and we are doing everything we can to keep prices down for our customers, including growing our entry range ‘Savers’, offering free meals for children in our cafes and investing in our My Morrisons loyalty scheme.

“We believe we are competitive across the store with good standards, pricing and availability.”

Indeed, the prices of instant coffee is soaring and five best-sellers have risen by an average of 19% at four supermarkets.

For example, Kenco went from an average price of £4.25 in 2021 to £5.38 in 2022.

But data from the ONS reports that the average price of instant coffee per 100g has stayed pretty level since last October – fluctuating between £3.02 and £3.39.

Other food prices are fueling rampant inflation and it’s pushing supermarkets to up their prices on a whole host of products.
