MORRISONS has quietly hiked the cost of its cafe fry-up by 50p — to £7.49.

The supermarket used the introduction of a revamped menu this week to sneak out a 12 per cent price increase.

It means a larger breakfast is now £7.49, up from £6.99, while a bacon butty is £3.25, up from £3.95.

Burgers have gone up 50p and main meals by at least the same amount. Some hot drinks are up 10p.

The chain blamed the moves on the Government ending a reduced VAT rate for the hospitality sector that it introduced to help during the pandemic.

Retailers also face rising inflation and energy bills.

But it is yet another blow to those already hit by a cost of living crisis.

And yesterday shoppers were warned that grocery bills could rise by another £271 a year.

Analysts Kantar said grocery prices climbed 5.9 per cent in the last 12 months — the biggest hike since 2011.

Meanwhile Sarah Coles, of investment firm Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “Supermarket cafes are generally a haven of low prices and generous portions.

“So these hikes are a nasty blow for bargain-hunting breakfasters.

“It’s something we’re seeing in cafes, pubs and ­restaurants around the country.

“And for an awful lot of people, it’s going to mean that small treats that bring real joy — like a Morrisons Big Breakfast — may have to be off the menu for some time.”

There are 406 cafes in Morrisons across the UK.

The chain said: “Our summer menu includes five new options as well as great deals and price holds, a range of smaller meals, like mini fish and chips for just £4.99, and our ‘kids eat free, all day, every day’ promotion.”

Until the menu change, adults had to spend £4.49 for kids to qualify.
