Meta Inc’s Threads app launched by Instagram that has been called a Twitter-killer has signed up more than 100 million users in less than five days.

That is according to data tracking websites on Monday, suggesting the app has smashed the record of AI tool ChatGPT for fastest-growing consumer app.

While ChatGPT took two months to hit the 100 million user mark and video-sharing app TikTok took nine months, Instagram itself took two and a half years to reach that mark after its 2010 launch.

Threads went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries late on Wednesday (July 5), though it is not available in Europe because parent company Meta is unsure how to navigate the European Union‘s data privacy legislation.

Meanwhile, experts have described the traffic of Elon Musk-owned Twitter as ‘tanking’ in the face of the new competition.

Twitter is thought to have around 200 million regular users but it has suffered repeated technical failures since Elon Musk bought the platform last year and sacked thousands of staff.

Musk, who also serves as the boss of Tesla and SpaceX, has also alienated many users by introducing charges for previously free services and allowing banned right-wing accounts back on the platform.

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince shared a graph on Twitter showing the platform’s steady decline in use since January, saying the app’s traffic was ‘tanking’.

Several rivals have emerged but most are niche platforms without the capacity to grow at the necessary scale to dethrone Twitter.

Threads, however, is finding it easier because it is linked to Instagram, which has more than one billion regular users.

Online data service Quiver Quantitative reported that the app passed 100 million users at 7am GMT on Monday (0300 EST).

Other websites using a count of the ‘badges’ received by Instagram users who have downloaded Threads reckoned the mark had passed earlier.

Musk has threatened to sue Meta for stealing trade secrets and intellectual property, claims denied by the company, which also owns Facebook and WhatsApp.

Threads calls retweets ‘reposts’ and tweets ‘threads.’ It allows users to post up to 500 characters of text and up to five minutes of video.

In the latest installment of their rivalry, a parody account of Musk on Twitter – which recently went viral for criticizing Threads, dubbed the Meta boss ‘lizard boy’.

Musk has further escalated his war of words with Zuckerberg as he calls the Meta boss ‘lizard boy’

The post on July 7 read: ‘I spent $44 billion for this app and now Lizard boy just decided to hit copy and paste. It’s personal now. See you in the cage, Zuck.’

Responded to the tweet, Musk said:  ‘So many people think this account is me.’

He accompanied the tweet with a side-eye emoji, prompting speculation that he is behind the proudly anti-Zuckerberg account.

He later told YouTube star Mr Beast that he is not behind the account, which has taken to mocking Zuckerberg in recent weeks.

In one tweet, it posted a mocked-up photo of Musk’s face on the body of a UFC fighter and added: ‘I have a proposal for Mr. Zuckerberg… Winner of our fight gets ownership of the other persons social media platform for 24 HOURS. You win, you get Twitter. I win, I get Meta. Let me know. Best, Elon ‘your wife drives a Tesla’ Musk.’

Another said: ‘Lizard boy will be lucky if the fight goes like this. I’m on a mission to break his face.’

Although the identity of the parody account’s owner has yet to be confirmed, Musk himself has tweeted similar things about Zuckerberg.
