However, fast food lovers will still be able to order at drive-thru restaurants and for home delivery.

McDonald’s tweeted: “Following the government announcements, we are pleased to remain open, but with a few changes.

“We know this is a really difficult time for everyone and we really appreciate your patience and kindness, both with our crew and online.”

In an accompanying statement the chain said: “Our restaurants across the UK and Ireland will remain open for Drive-thru and McDeliery.

“Click & Serve through the My Mcdonald’s app will be available at our Drive-thru restauarants.

“Dine-in and walk-in services will be temporarily closed in all restaurants from 11pm tonight while we review and verify any additional safety measures for these services.”

“With smaller teams and social distancing in the kitchen it will take longer to serve you”.

The statement added: “Our restaurant teams are working incredibly hard in difficult circumstances, your kindness and patience is greatly appreciated.”

It is not clear when Walk-in services can resume, but customers are advised to keep a look out on McDonald’s social media channels and website for any updates.

Under the new, tougher, measures hospitality venues like pubs and bars have been forced to stay closed.

However, food and non-alcoholic drinks are still able to be sold as takeaway items or through click-and-collect and drive-through until 11pm.

The new guidance says that all food and drink – including alcohol – is allowed to be delivered.

The togher measures came after a terrifying surge of a mutant strain of Covid-19 saw the  alert level raised to five yesterday – the first time it has hit the highest rating.

Boris Johnson said: “With most of the country already under extreme measures, it is clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out.

“In England, we must therefore go into a national lockdown which is tough enough to contain this variant.

“That means the Government is once again instructing you to stay at home.”

Boris Johnson says 1m people in England now infected with covid-19, roughly 2% of the population as he defends lockdown
