Customers claim the “hopeless” eco-friendly cutlery turns to mush in the ice cream.

McDonald’s has ditched plastic spoons for paper ones

The backlash comes three years after the fast food giant experienced a similar furore over the introduction of paper straws.

Last week, a McDonald’s fan tweeted of the spoons: “I hate putting paper in my mouth at all. Also, they’re too weak to stir the actual ice cream. Hopeless.” Another moaned: “It is the most horrible sensory experience I have had.”

And a third reckoned: “My McDonald’s McFlurry came with a paper spoon. It’s mushing into the ice cream.”

Another said the introduction had “ruined Christmas”.

The paper spoons, right, are being rolled out in England and Wales along with recyclable knives and forks.

Scotland and Ireland began the switch early last year.

Nina Prichard, from McDonald’s, said of the move: “We are pleased to announce another step forward in eliminating single-use plastics and it’s great to be switching our McFlurry spoons to this new paper-based material.”
