Mr Lewis said: “Christmas is a heavy-spending period so I want to talk about maximising the cashback.

“How you can get paid to spend… £100s of pounds a year.”

He added: “Use a top cashback card.

“By far the easiest is the debit card from Chase. It’s an app and gives you one per cent ‘speedy cashback’ up to a maximum of £15 per month.”

Mr Lewis added it was the “top card for overseas spending too”.

It is simple to use and you don’t have to switch bank accounts to get it.

You just download the app, it doesn’t do a hard credit check.

Then you just pay in the amount of money you want to spend.

The top credit card, Mr Lewis said was the American Express Platinum Everyday, which he said was particularly good if you were spending a large amount as it gave your five per cent cashback for the first three months, then one per cent after, up to a maximum of £100.

He said: “If you’re making a big purchase, you might as well use that one.”

The cashback is paid after one year provided you have spent £3,000.

Mr Lewis reminded people though: “Of course, you have to pay it in full” otherwise you’ll pay 31 per cent APR.

He also said that you can get cashback through cashback websites, which pay the consumer to pay for goods through their website.

However, he warned that it was best to look for the goods you wanted first and then see if you could get money back through one of the sites.

Mr Lewis also said you could get money back through Airtime Rewards with your mobile.

You link your bank account which monitors your spending and gives you cashback at certain stores.
