The £4 M&S food meal comes with cold baked beans, chipolata sausages, poached egg, cherry tomatoes and smoked bacon, served in a cardboard box.

An image of the meal this week went viral on Twitter along with a poll, which found that just a quarter of around 70,500 participants would eat it.

One joker on Twitter said: “Those sausages look like my fingers when I’ve been in the bath too long.”

While another added: “How to pretend you are on a 12 hour flight when you are actually in your kitchen and could make proper food. Ugh.”

But, others think that the ready meal, which takes two minutes to heat in the microwave, has been a surprise hit – in spite of people describing it as gross-looking aeroplane food.

The product has a rating of 4.2 out of 5 on the Ocado website from 91 customers, with more than half giving it five stars and another quarter giving it four stars.

Among the glowing comments from customers was one that said: “As a single pensioner it’s far easier than buying all the separate ingredients and then cooking it.

“ With a couple of slices of buttered toast it makes a substantial hearty breakfast. Loved it. Well done Marks and Spencers.”

Another added: “Just the treat we needed with builders in and only access to microwave, toaster and kettle (to keep them in tea).

“Added a slice of toast and microwaved mushrooms for a very tasty, filling lunch.

“Price comparable to any decent ready meal, and more interesting.”

One customer queried the eggs, asking: “One thing that totally baffles us is how have they managed to produce a poached egg that is then microwaved but still retains it’s beautiful runny yolk ??

“If you like a cooked breakfast than you will love this, quick, convenient, lovely textures and beautiful flavours. What more could you ask for?”

The only practical issue was customers complaining of bean juice leaking out of the cardboard box.

M&S was approached for a comment.
