ON THE RIGHT LINES: Leaves on the line, sheep on the track . . . the list of excuses for train delays is endless. But thanks to the Delay Repay scheme, you’re entitled to money back for delays of 15 minutes or more. Refunds are between 12.5 and 100 per cent of the ticket price, depending on the length of delay and ticket type. Each rail firm has a Delay Repay section on its website.

FORGOTTEN FUNDS: There’s an estimated £850million lying in lost bank accounts. mylostaccount.org.uk — a free service — helps users trace their lost accounts and get reunited with their money. This applies to savings accounts, current accounts and even Premium Bond prizes. If you’ve lost track of a pension, use the Government’s free Pension Tracing Service.

TOP OF THE BILL: Energy bills are a hot topic right now but there’s a chance your energy provider might owe YOU. If you pay for your energy bills by direct debit, your account could be in credit. This usually happens during the summer months when less energy is used, and it balances out again when you use more energy in the winter. However, if your account is in significant credit, you’re entitled to ask your supplier for that money back.

CODE BREAKER: Millions of people end up paying too much tax each year due to tax code errors. Don’t be one of them. Moneysavingexpert.com has a tax code calculator, or you can head to the gov.uk website for more information.
