Those over 60 will be able to take advantage of the initiative all day, every day of the week in all of Asda’s 205 cafes.

Last year the meal deal was dubbed the “Winter Warmer” initiative when it was first launched and the supermarket giant extended the initial scheme for two months from November to February to support those struggling

But it’s not just pensioners who are set to benefit this year, Asda has made its Kids Eat for £1 meal deal permanent across all cafes as well.

Baby food is also available as part of the initiative, with little ones able to get a free pouch of Ella’s Kitchen baby food in their local Asda café.

Another said: “Wow! That’s such an incentive to shop there.”

“It’s such a great thing to do,” said a third.

Selected Asda stores also run a ‘Community Cuppa’ campaign in our cafes by creating space for community groups who may otherwise struggle to meet due to rental costs or high energy costs.

Spaces will be available on weekdays in November and December from 2pm to 6pm and all community group members who visit will receive unlimited free tea or coffee.

The latest figures from Asda’s income tracker reveal that 40% of the lowest-earning households are still experiencing negative disposable income in September, meaning that their income does not cover what they need to spend on bills and other essentials.

Kris Comerford, Asda’s chief commercial officer said: “We know winter is set to be incredibly hard for thousands of pensioners as they continue to worry about how to keep themselves warm in the face of rising living costs and on a fixed income.”

“Last year we served over 650,000 meals to the over 60’s in two months, by bringing the initiative back for 2023 and extending it until February we hope it will prove just as impactful across the winter months for those who need it most.”

Asda isn’t the only supermarket to step up to help pensioners in the cost of living crisis.

A child under 16 can eat for free at Morrisons cafés when you buy an adult meal worth at least £4.99.

A kid’s meal comes with a piece of fruit and Tropicana kid’s orange juice, apple drink, or bottle of water. Morrisons is rolling out the scheme nationwide.

Sainsbury’s launched a “Feed your family for a fiver” campaign. On the Sainsbury’s website, you can access cheap recipes that will feed a family a family of four for under £5.

Waitrose has a hot drink offer in partnership with Caffè Nero for members of its myWaitrose loyalty scheme.

You need to bring your own cup and make a purchase – but there’s no minimum spend to get your free drink.
