Customers can currently pay between £3.25 and £3.45 to get unlimited top ups of fizzy drinks including Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite Zero.

But from October, diners will no longer be able to get free refills of classic Coca-Cola.

That’s because the government is banning free refills of high sugar drinks this year as part of its strategy to tackle unhealthy eating.

The new legislation will come into force from October 1, and targets the sale of products high in fat, salt or sugar (HFSS).

Nando’s fans will still be able to get diet versions of their favourite drinks, including Diet Coke and Coke Zero.

A Nando’s spokesperson said: “We will change our Classic Coke proposition in line with HFSS Government legislation due to come in October 2022, all lower sugar and zero sugar drinks are not affected.”

Bottles of Coca-Cola that aren’t refillable are not expected to be affected by the change.

Other new rules included in the regulations mean shoppers will no longer see sweet treats on offer near any supermarket entrance or checkout.

Adverts for HFSS products won’t be allowed to run before 9pm and limitations on social media promotions will be imposed from January 1 next year.

Businesses with small premises or less than 50 employees are exempt from those rules.

The restaurant chain added 55p to the cost of its whole chicken dish.

It’s not the only fan favourite to up its prices, as Greggs announced the cost of sausage rolls would increase by at least 5p this year.
