YOU may spend your downtime on self-care, but what about when you’re at work?

The average Brit spends 1,730 hours working each year, so looking after your mental wellbeing in the workplace has never been more important.

Monday October 10 is World Mental Health Day and this year’s theme is:  ‘Make mental health and wellbeing for all a global priority’.

To help, here are Sun Job’s expert tips for boosting mental health for you and your colleagues at work.

Do a job you enjoy

It sounds simple, but enjoying your work is the easiest way to feel positive in the office.

You may not love everything about your role, but focus on the parts you do enjoy and over time, move your career towards a position which makes you more feel fulfilled.

Check in on colleagues

Create a community where everyone is supported.

Ask ‘how are you today?’ and really listen to the answer.

If someone says ‘fine’ but you can see they’re not, ask if they’d like to talk more.

Train as a Mental Health First Aider

While a conventional first aider looks after physical injuries at work, a Mental Health First Aider supports workmates with their mental health.

Be real

‘Masking’ who you are can cause mental stress.

With more and more workplaces moving towards true inclusion and diversity, stop worrying about ‘fitting in’ and start seeing what you can bring to the table as your authentic self.

Uplift your working environment

Easy changes like pot plants, more fresh air or a repaint can make you feel differently about where you work.

Work with your boss to see if the company can fund a few improvements.

Take a break

Getting away from your desk or work area each day is hugely important.

Give yourself regular breaks, eat well and get outside for sunshine and fresh air, especially in the winter months.

Breaks can help reset your stress levels and make it easier to cope.

Work with HR to improve your firm’s policies

Most firms now have a Mental Health policy. Ask to see yours and assess whether it needs changes or improvements.
