The boss of Lloyd’s of London has been treated in hospital after he was involved in a collision with a car while riding his bike.

John Neal, 57, sustained serious injuries on Saturday but is expected to make a full recovery, Lloyd’s said.

The insurance market will be run by chief operating officer Burkhard Keese and chief of markets Patrick Tiernan with chairman Bruce Carnegie-Brown’s help while Neal recovers.

Neal succeeded Dame Inga Beale as Lloyd’s chief executive in 2018 having previously run insurer QBE.

His association with Lloyd’s dates to 1985 when he started working at Bankside Managing Agency as an underwriter, the youngest ever at the insurance market at the time.

He is involved in repairing the reputation of the 336-year-old institution – known as one of the three pillars of the City along with the Bank of England and London Stock Exchange – following allegations of bullying, excessive drinking and sexual harassment.

Carnegie-Brown says the business is cleaning up its culture.
