THOUSANDS of households across the UK will see the £150 council tax rebate land in their accounts this week.

The payments will be welcome relief as the nation continues to face the cost of living crisis.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced the free support earlier this year in February to help people cope with soaring inflation.

If your property falls within the council tax band of A to D, you are entitled to a one off cash payment from the government which is being dished out by your local authority.

The £150 does not need to be repaid, but the date which you can expect it will change depending on your area and how you pay your council tax bill.

Those who pay by direct debit will typically see the free cash sooner than others, as their bank details are already on file.

And those who pay by other means will need to apply for the money – some councils begun revealing how non-direct debit customers can claim the money.

You can find your local council using the government’s search tool here.

Some families have already received the payment, including 30,000 Hull residents last week.

And more are set to receive the lump sum in their accounts this week.

Here’s a list of the councils that will begin rolling out payments from today, April 25.

Please note, we will continue to add to this list over the next few days as more councils confirm payments.

Councils issuing payments this week:

Sunderland City Council – April 25

Sunderland City Council provided 71,000 residents with the council tax rebate by Easter.

The authority explains on its website that these payments were for residents who already pay their council tax by direct debit.

It then confirms that residents who have recently become direct debit payers will start to receive their payment from Monday 25 April.

Though this is providing their bank details have been validated.

Those paying by other means need to fill out an online application form, and applications will then be verified and validated before payments can be made.

Leeds City Council – April 25

Some residents living in Leeds may have already received their payment between April 1 and April 18 if their direct debit date was at the end of March.

Those whose direct debit date was April 10, you should expect the payment to be in your bank account today, April 25.

Anyone with a direct debit set up later than April 10 should expect their £150 payment between May 2 and May 9.

If you don’t pay your council tax by direct debit, you will have to complete the rebate form online.

Bracknell Forest Council – April 25 to 29

Bracknell Forest Council announced that payments to direct debit customers will be made from today, April 25.

But it could take a few days for the payments to be received, so you should expect to see the cash by this Friday, April 29.

Like the other authorities, Bracknell Forest requires residents who don’t pay by direct debit to fill out the online form to claim the support.

Arun District Council – April 28

Payments are already being rolled out to Arun residents, with the first group being paid around April 14.

Direct debit customers who make a payment today could get the cash as soon as April 28, this Thursday.

The council doesn’t yet have full details on how to apply for the rebate if you do not pay by direct debit, but it expects applications will be able to be made from April 29 with clearer instructions.

Manchester City Council – April 29

Manchester residents who pay their council tax by direct debit should have the £150 paid directly into their bank account automatically.

Manchester City Council aims to make the payments by April 29 – though this doesn’t apply to everyone.

If you signed up to pay by direct debit after April 7, you won’t get the payment automatically.

Instead, you’ll receive a letter with details of how you can apply for the £150 payment.

The council expects letters to be sent from today April 25.

St Helens Council – April 30

On its website, St Helens Council says customers paying via direct debit should expect to see the free help in their accounts by April 30.

Those paying in a different way will need to make a claim for the cash by filling out an online form.

The council confirms that you can choose to receive your payment by either bank transfer, Post Office voucher or a credit onto your council tax account.

Preston City Council – End of April onwards

If Preston City Council has your bank details on file because you pay by direct debit, you should receive the £150 rebate this week.

The council says it is aiming make payments from the end of April onwards, and this week marks the final week of April.

For those who don’t have a direct debit set up, you will need to verify your bank details with Preston council or select an alternative payment method for the cash.

The authority notes that applications will be made through a secure process, and it will publish details of how to do so at a later date.

Am I eligible for the payment?

Please note that eligibility for the council tax rebate applies for all residents across the UK.

Each council will have a set of eligibility criteria outlined on its website, though some common requirements include:

  • The property is in council tax bands A to D;
  • The property is occupied;
  • The property is the main dwelling of the residents, i.e., not a second home;
  • The residents pay council tax.

Some households may face a six month wait for the council tax rebate in worst cases.
