LIDL has urgently recalled a popular Christmas product over fears it could be contaminated with salmonella and cause serious illness.

The discount supermarket warned customers not eat its deluxe stuffed dates as they could trigger severe food poisoning.

Shoppers who bought the 240g packet, with a best before date of January 21 2022, should return it to a Lidl store.

You’ll get a full refund when you return the dates, which have the batch code 21301/196.

Don’t worry if you can’t find the receipt as you won’t need this to get your money back.

Salmonella causes food poisoning, with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and general illness including aches, a high temperature and chills.

Symptoms can flare up within a few hours of eating the contaminated product but in some cases it can take a few weeks for illness to begin, according to the NHS.

No other Deluxe products in Lidl’s stores are affected by the recall, the company said.

Lidl also issued an apology for any inconvenience caused.

Customers with questions or concerns can contact Lidl customer services on 03704441234.

It’s not unusual for shops and food manufacturers to recall items when they identify a safety concern.

Usually it’s because they contain something that could cause food poisoning or an allergic reaction.

Recent recalls have included a carbonara with allergens missing from the label and chocolate ice creams that mistakenly contained plastic.
