Try my tips for cutting the cost while still keeping your beloved pooch or moggy satisfied . . .
DITCH THE BIG BRANDS: Buying the most expensive brand of pet food doesn’t automatically mean it is better for them. Most pet foods contain similar ingredients, so ditch the big brands in favour of cheaper supermarket versions. At Asda, you can pick up a 3kg bag of its Hero beef dry adult dog food for £3. That is half the price of Bakers’ version, which normally costs £6 for the same size of bag.
SAVING: £3 a bag
BUY IN BULK: Providing you have the storage space, stocking up on the biggest bag of food available will save you money in the long run. Take a look at the price per kg or per 100g to make sure you are getting the best value. And don’t forget to check if the food has a long shelf-life.

MAKE YOUR OWN: Being your pet’s personal chef can save a decent chunk of cash and you don’t need to be overly creative to do so. Many homemade pet food recipes use simple ingredients such as rice, carrots and beans. But always make sure it is nutritionally balanced. You could mix a homemade meal with bought dry food to give your pet extra vitamins and minerals while still saving money.

LOOK FOR DISCOUNTS: Keep an eye out for money-off vouchers or cashback offers as you spend. Also, sign up for loyalty schemes such as the Pets At Home VIP Club, which gives tailored offers on food and other products.
