Just one new public charging point was installed for every 62 electric cars bought in the final three months of last year.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said 119,042 plug-in vehicles were registered between October and December – but just 1,926 chargers were added to the network.

The figures will fuel fears that Britain’s electric car revolution is being held back by a lack of charging infrastructure.

The issue has seen charging points overwhelmed with long queues of electric vehicles (EVs) building up as frustrated drivers wait their turn.

And it is feared the problem is getting worse.

In the final three months of 2021, one charging point was installed for every 42 EVs registered, a far better ratio than one to 62 a year later.

Across 2022 as a whole, one charging point was installed for every 53 new plug-in cars sold.

The SMMT expects plug-ins to make up more than a quarter of new cars this year and almost a third in 2024.

The trade association is calling on the Government to boost the supply of charging points.

‘Mandating roll-out targets for infrastructure and regulating service standards would give drivers certainty they can always find a working, available charger,’ an SMMT spokesman said.

The Mail recently revealed that nearly a third of electric car charging points are in London, with the borough of Westminster having more than Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Sheffield and Birmingham combined.

And the SMMT spokesman added: ‘Infrastructure must be built ahead of demand else poor provision risks delaying the electric transition.’
