A New York bankruptcy judge who over the past two decades has steered some of the most contentious corporate bankruptcies, including the restructurings of OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma LP and Sears Holdings Corp. , will retire next year.

Judge Robert Drain of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in White Plains, N.Y., plans to retire June 30, the court said Tuesday. Judge Drain, who joined the bench in 2002, will continue hearing bankruptcy cases pending before him until he retires, according to the court.
