They will take the total number of UK sites where the service is available to more than 1,000. That includes 500 Co-op stores.

The roll out comes as Shell and Waitrose, the sister brand of John Lewis, also expand their partnership.

Yesterday they revealed plans to install 800 “Shell Recharge” electric vehicle charging points in up to 100 Waitrose car parks across the country by 2025.

The first will launch early next year. Each site is expected to have six 22kW and two 50kW rapid charging points.

Bernadette Williamson, of Shell UK Retail, said: “This is great news for EV drivers, knowing they can easily, quickly and reliably charge up at Shell points while shopping at Waitrose.”

The two companies also agreed to increase the number of Shell Select stores offering Waitrose food by 75 across the UK.

It will take the total to at least 125 by 2025.
