Seasonal jobs have traditionally been filled by students or school leavers, but are becoming increasingly popular with those currently out of work and career switchers.

This month, resorts and attractions across the UK are scrambling to hire staff for the summer.

Legoland Windsor is one destination looking for staff. It has 200 summer jobs going, including ride and attractions hosts, plus hotel and housekeeping roles.

Georgie Hughes is a rides and attractions host at the resort. The 20-year-old from Bracknell, Berks, worked at a children’s trampoline centre, but joined Legoland to gain new customer service skills. She said: “I’d definitely recommend this job to others. You build up your confidence while working with a super-friendly team.”

Emma Pattinson, Legoland HR Director, said: “One of the brilliant aspects of working at the resort is that you have the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of different areas.” Apply by March 25 at legoland.co.uk/jobs.

The need for new workers in the industry is so great that Visit England’s upcoming English Tourism Week is showcasing the varied opportunities available.

Boss Andrew Stokes said: “We’re using the week to highlight the range and variety of jobs across the industry and to encourage people to consider a career in tourism.

“From tour operating, destination marketing, hospitality and hotel management to business events, visitor attractions and policy development, our people- focused sector has a huge amount to offer employees.” Many employers have permanent jobs on offer for successful temporary staff.

Here are some sites to find summer work:

REAL HANDY WORK

BUDGET hotel chain Travelodge needs 40 new maintenance staff, as the busy summer season approaches.

The roles are permanent and each of these employees will be given their own network of hotels to service.

Applicants need a UK driving licence and must be City & Guilds or NVQ 2 qualified in at least one trade skill-set.

Scott Rutherford, Director of Property Services at Travel-odge said: “This team is the backbone of our operation and regarded as the fourth emergency service for our 578 hotel teams.”

TURN IT INTO A CAREER

WANT a job for longer than the summer? A fifth of seasonal workers find permanent jobs with their firms. Here the experts at Snag A Job reveal how to turn summer work into a lasting career.

  • MAKE A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION: View the seasonal role as an extended interview or trial run. Turn up early and always make an extra effort. Your boss will notice.
  • ACT LIKE YOU’RE HERE TO STAY: Don’t approach it with a “short-timer” mentality. Instead, think of it as the job you’ll have for a while. Introduce yourself to every staff member, even if they are not in your department. Becoming an integral part of the team will show managers you’d be an asset.
  • MAKE YOUR INTEREST KNOWN: Tell the hiring manager you’re interested in staying on longer and ask how you can make that happen. The more managers know about your goals, the easier it is for them to help you achieve them.
  • GO ABOVE AND BEYOND: Exceeding the basic expectations of your role will go a long way. Taking on other responsibilities shows you’re a versatile team player. Helping co-workers, stocking empty shelves and cleaning are all things that show you’re going the extra mile.
  • DON’T BROADCAST ANOTHER JOB SEARCH: Even if you want to turn your temporary gig into something permanent, keep an eye out for other jobs until you’re certain it will happen.
