Savemoneysavewater.co.uk collates all the freebies available from the water companies around the country, such as £20 regulated shower heads, which you can get for free.

The Energy Saving Trust says switching to a water efficient shower head reduces hot water usage and could save a family of four on a water meter a total of £195 on their water and energy bills.

This is because less energy is needed to pump, heat and treat the water

But this will vary depending on your supplier and your usage.

How to claim a free shower head

You will need to visit the Save Money Save Water website where you will then need to fill in a short survey about your water usage.

Most read in Money

It will ask questions such how many people live in your home, how many showers you take a week as a household and if you water your garden.

After filling out the survey, you will be redirected to your water supplier’s website to claim the freebie.

Whether you can get the shower head for free depends on where you live as not all water companies offer them.

AnglianEssex & Suffolk, Northumbrian or Thames Water aren’t part of Save Water Save Money’s promotion, but you can sometimes get the freebies if you go direct to their websites.

You can also get other water saving devices for free, like buffalo bags, which save around one to two litres of water with every flush.

What is an eco shower head and how do they work?

A regulated shower head uses more water more efficiently reducing it to between seven or eight litres per minute, where a normal shower head has a 15 litres per minute flow rate.

Which? says that there’s a simple test to work out how much your current shower head uses, and if you can benefit from an eco one.

Put a 2-litre container on the shower floor and if it takes less than 12 seconds to fill when the shower is running on full, that’s the equivalent of it putting out 10 litres every minute.

If that’s the case, you could benefit from a low-flow or water-saving shower head, it says.

The shower heads look just like any other you might pick up from your local DIY store and they work with a standard hose, combi boliers and gravity showers that have a pump fitted.

You won’t be able to use it if you have and electric or digital shower though and you musty have at least 0.5 bar water pressure.

Electric and digital showers may have eco modes though, so it’s worth checking your instruction manual.

How to get help with your energy bills

Households have been warned energy bills could top £5,000 next year, according to experts.

Unfortunately, there isn’t an awful lot you can do to escape rising energy prices.

With the cost of living sky-rocketing and inflation expected to hit 13% by the end of the year, we’ve all had our purse strings pulled tight, and everyone will be affected.

However, there are always schemes and funds available to support you throughout the price hikes.

For example, there are plenty of energy grants and schemes open to help you out if you’re struggling, like the British Gas hardship fund which can lend you up to £1,500 free cash towards bills.

There’s also a one-off fuel voucher from your energy supplier if you’re on a prepayment metre.

Contact your supplier directly to see what they offer, what the eligibility requirements are, and how much you can get.

If you don’t know who your supplier is, you can find out here.

In terms of council funds, the Household Support Fund helps families with the rising cost of living, has been extended.

This help could include cash grants to pay bills or cover food costs – the help will depend on where you live.

For example, residents in Blackpool can get as much as £300, depending on their circumstances.

To find out what support is available in your area, contact your local council.

If you’re a pensioner, there are also extra grants available if you’re worried – those on Pension Credit should be eligible for the £650 cost of living payment.

All pensioners should also get an extra £300 payment in November or December to help pay for bills and essentials.
