An online multiplayer entry was planned, announced, and is now cancelled.

However, it appears one of the bigger The Last of Us games will never see a release.

The next new game in The Last of Us franchise was set to be a multiplayer game called The Last of Us Online.

However, it has recently been announced that this project has been cancelled following the amount of work that would need to go into it post-launch.

Developer Naughty Dog claims that the project’s scope meant that the studio would have to “become solely a live service games studio.”

However, Naughty Dog is best known for its single-player story-focused games, so this change would go against what the studio usually creates.

A statement released by the studio reads: “In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear.

“To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post-launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games.

“So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”

Learnings and investments from the project will be put forward into other projects, though Naughty Dog hasn’t released information about these yet.

The company has said that there is more than one big single-player project in the works.

Games that pivot from a single-player focus to the Live service model tend not to do well historically.

A good example of this is the Suicide Squad game from Rocksteady, which follows on from the team’s excellent work on the Arkham Trilogy.

The first Suicide Squad trailer reviewed so poorly that there were significant delays that have gone into reworking the game.
