A Norman castle set in 25 acres of parkland on the edge of the Lake District is up for grabs for £9.5million.

The Grade I listed property is one of the country’s most historic castles and boasts a 12th century motte, a Norman keep and a round tower.

The property is among the most viewed homes for sale on Rightmove last month, alongside the property Alan Carr and Amanda Holden renovated on their TV show Amanda and Alan’s Italian Job.

Appleby Castle has a rich history, having been owned by Kings of Scotland and England.

The resident that it is perhaps most associated with is Lady Anne Clifford, who did a lot of restoration work on the castle – including inserting a cross-wall in the keep and adding corner turrets.

More recently, the exterior of the castle’s keep was restored by English Heritage and it is today a museum dedicated to Norman history.

The castle itself is currently operated as a hotel, hosting weddings, sporting events and business conferences.

And during the summer months, the castle holds a variety of special events, including open-air theatre and battle re-enactments.

History tours of the castle are also held throughout the summer months, and visitors can stay overnight in one of its four poster beds, or in one of the holiday cottages in the grounds.
