THE WWE games have experienced highs and lows, but since the reinvention of the series with WWE 2K22, it has been one of the strongest sporting series available.

Since then, WWE games have tried to improve and refine on the formula while adding some flashy new features.

WWE 2K24 adds four new match types over ‘23, many of which have not been included in the series for over a decade.

Ambulance and Casket matches only end when you send your opponent home in them, and these are very fun to play with friends.

The button-mashing minigames can get tiring over the course of the match.

However, there is great tension with the close calls to push your opponent towards the Ambulance or Casket.

Gauntlet matches are also deeper than we expected, and quickly became one of our favourite modes.

There are three types, and the first is a set of one-on-one matches where the winner continues on until there is one person left standing.

The second type plays similarly to Royal Rumble, requiring pins and submissions for eliminations.

There can be up to 30 wrestlers in these matches which make them all the more exciting.

Special Guest referee matches put you in the position of the referee and let you be as fair or unfair as you wish.

It gives you another way to participate in wrestling matches, mixing up how you can play, and tell your own story in the ring.

The ‘Trading Blows’ minigame is the biggest change to how matches work, and recreates situations where two competitors slowly take punches.

In general, things feel a lot smoother than WWE 2K23. Transitions are sleeker, and grappling is faster-paced.

These improvements have also been added to returning modes, like Showcase which has a lot more variety.

There are still bugs though, and Universe is the mode hit the worst by this, where some aspects that worked last year no longer do.

The team’s track record is good on this count, and we expect fixes to come shortly after release.

WWE 2K24 still does what it’s best known for well, taking larger than life personas and putting them in your hands.

It puts the hype and silliness of TV wrestling matches, and puts it all into a playable format.
