NETFLIX customers are missing a hidden upgrade and it is why you can never hear what’s being said in your favourite films and TV shows.

One expert, known as Matty McTech or @setupspawn on Instagram, has revealed a trick to help you stop reaching for the volume button.

If your default audio option has a '5.1' beside it, this means Netflix thinks you have a surround sound system

If you’re constantly struggling to hear dialogue over background music and sound effects, it’s probably because Netflix thinks you have surround sound when you don’t, Matty explained.

“For some reason Netflix will default your shows audio to 5.1 even if you don’t have surround sound,” he said

“This may make voice hard to hear over the background music. Try this trick to fix it!”

You want to make sure Netflix knows this by making an easy change in your settings.

This way, the right audio will play out of the right speakers in your TV.

To do this, open up any TV or movie.

Then scroll to the bottom of the screen where it will offer you subtitles and click ‘Other…’

From there you should see a list of audio options.

If your default audio option has a ‘5.1’ beside it, this means Netflix thinks you have a surround sound system and is pumping out the level of audio that is appropriate for that set up.

“Netflix thinks you have five speakers and one sub-woofer,” Matty said.

“So, if you don’t, you want to select English Original.”

This way Netflix will know you’re just relying on your TV speakers.

After making the switch, Matty said the background music was quieter and he could finally hear what people were saying on-screen.
