A LANDLORD has hit back at claims she’s greedy after being blasted for criticising her tenants’ “disaster” behaviour.

The woman, who posted the rant to Tiktok, said her woes kicked off when the initial tenant wanted to end their three-year lease on her London property.

“So this whole tenant disaster fiasco, it turns out (that) all the (end of lease) damages put together is basically three times the deposit,” she began.

“Anyway, I decided I needed to get this person (the tenant) out of my life because it’s been a long three years of really too much stress from this person.

“Basically I want this person out of my life so I was like, release the full deposit and that will be it – I’ll just take on the rest.”

She then went on to detail how the tenant wanted to move out of the property a month before their lease was finished, which she and the agent agreed to if a replacement was found.

That replacement, the woman said, paid his one week deposit and passed reference checks before “disappearing completely”.

“He comes out briefly after a few weeks…then I get a phone call, and it’s been like a month, from the agents saying ‘yeah, this person came back and paid all the money and was like “I need to move in now!”‘.”

“No, the contract’s been invalidated because you just didn’t show up, nor were you contactable,” the landlord said in response to the tenant’s behaviour.

“I mean what is up with people, I just really want to know. Like what planet do they come from? I’m not having another drama tenant, no thanks.”

LET IT OUT

But Tiktok users were quick to take aim at the woman’s attitude, saying such issues come with letting a property out.

“Surely you have to understand that this is part of the job?” one commenter asked.

“Like, the ‘damages’ that you’ve described sound like somebody just living in the flat.”

“Aww, poor you. You hoarded property and it didn’t work out exactly how you wanted,” another quipped.

However, several users offered slightly more sympathy, saying tenants also had an obligation to treat a property agreement with respect.

“Wow, hope the other comments are trolls. When has it become acceptable for others to damage/break contracts and then victim blame the victim,” one woman wrote.

“You are brilliant and this is totally ridiculous trying to provide a good service. People today believe they are all entitled to free stuff,” another added.

Tenants in the UK have certain rights in a privately rented property, including having their deposit returned when the tenancy ends – and in some circumstances have the deposit protected.

However, this also comes with the responsibility to take good care of the property, including paying the agreed rent, even if repairs are needed during a dispute with the landlord.
