AN ICONIC high street chain is set to close down one of its beloved stores as a huge sale on cards, games and chocolate treats has been announced.

For decades the shop has left customers happy with a wide range of affordable buys especially around Christmas time but 2023 will be the final festive period shoppers can snap up a bargain deal.

Closing down signs have been placed outside WHSmith in Oban, Scotland as the store is set to be gone for good early next year.

The shop has always been a favourite for shoppers at Christmas time with a plethora of presents available including lovely diaries for the year ahead.

Shop workers at the popular store, sitting on George Street by the seafront, revealed the shop will permanently shut on February 17, as big preparations for a closing down sale are about to get underway.

The sale will be full of things from sweet treats like chocolate and candy to greetings cards, best selling books, family games and even stationary.

Newspapers and magazines are not going to be included in the sale but almost everything else in store will be marked down.

The store has been in Oban since 1998 when it was transformed from a John Menzies to the popular WHSmith store.

John Menzies used to be famous for their popular bookstalls littered across Scotland.

Earlier this year, the WHSmith store was forced to reduce its floorspace by a third in a blow for the high street.

Boots the chemist also announced earlier this year that it was considering closing one of its two branches in Oban.

Either the Boots at Soroba Road or the larger store on George Street are in the firing line as the company works to “consolidate” stores “in close proximity to” each other.

Naked Veg, a popular organic food store, has already had to leave the high street in recent months.

The shock closure of the WHSmith store comes after the branches boss gave a major update on the future of its UK stores.

The retailer has said that it won’t be opening up any more high street branches as it looks to place its focus elsewhere.

This has led to WHSmith closing a number of stores before the year ends.

One Manchester store is done for good as the bookshop and stationery retailer will close its store on Manchester’s Market Street on Saturday, December 2, according to The Manc.

Meanwhile, the retailer is set to shut its branch in Ramsgate, Kent, at the start of 2024.

WHSmith is also set to pull down the shutters on its shop in Alfreton, Derbyshire, in January 2024.
