Iceland has slashed veg to just 1p in supermarket price war

ICELAND has slashed the price of its veg to just 1p a bag.

It comes as competition hots up between supermarkets, with just days to go until Christmas dinners land on plates up and down the country.

Discount rivals like Lidl and Aldi slashed their own Christmas vegetables as low as 19p last week.

Now, Iceland has joined the slashed veggie craze and is offering shoppers prices at least 18p cheaper.

It’s the lowest price we’ve seen any of the supermarkets promote, though on Christmas Eve last year, an eagle-eyed shopper spotted Tesco had knocked the cost of veg to just 5p, which is a close second.

But there is a catch to the Iceland offer.

It’s only valid on bags of veg that would usually be £1 and under, and shoppers have to buy three at a time to claim the discount.

It does mean that they could save as much as £2.97 in the process though.

Plus, they only have to fork out a minimum 3p on what would be a mountain of greens and more – that can easily be stashed away in the freezer for a later date too.

Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland, said: “It isn’t just about winning the battle for the cheapest supermarket veg – we wanted to make sure that everyone is able to have a brilliant Christmas with their loved ones without having to worry about the monetary hangover that often follows.”

To claim you just have to enter the code “ICE1VEG” at the checkout.

You also have to be sure to opt for next day delivery too, if you want your greens guaranteed to arrive in time for the big day itself.

But it does mean you’ll need to keep in mind that it’ll cost you a minimum spend of £40 to get the penny goods delivered to your door next day for free.

So if you’re just after the budget broccoli and more, you might have to weigh up whether spending the minimum basket total is worth it for the penny deals – if you’re already stocked up for Christmas it’s another £39.97 you’d have to find.

The penny veggie deal isn’t on offer in store currently, so it’ll have to be an online shop you carry out to bag the mega discount.

The offer began yesterday afternoon and shoppers have until midnight tonight to claim, so there’s not long to bag your Christmas veggies with just the pennies in your pocket.

They’ll shoot back up to full price again from tomorrow, so now is the time to buy.

The frozen aisle haven of a supermarket has also released a further 180,000 delivery slots between now and Christmas Eve, so no one has to miss out on a delivery.

The valued slots have proven almost impossible to come by this year.

As many as 300,000 queued at a time for online slots back in November, just to get their turkeys delivered to the house in time.
