WHEN the sun comes out the first thing most of us reach for is a nice cooling ice cream.

Cornettos are probably the closest you can get to a Mr Whippy straight out a van, but they can be pretty expensive.

The cheapest we found for the Wall’s creamy dessert is a six-pack for £3 in Asda – or 50p each – but they can cost as much as £3.50 in some shops.

Luckily for those of us with a sweet tooth, almost every supermarket does its own bargain version of the popular treat.

Plus, the real deal is actually at least 20ml smaller than the dupes we tested so you’re getting more for your money either way.

I put the dupes to the test to see if the knock-off versions also tasted as good.

I gave each cone a score out of 10 for taste and price – here are there results.

Cornettos

  • Six per pack
  • 50p per ice cream

You can’t really go wrong with an original Cornetto, the vanilla ice cream combo with the nutty topping is a classic.

It tasted pleasant enough and the chocolate nib at the bottom of the cone was the perfect consistency, maybe a few too many chopped nuts for my taste on top.

But I could not ignore the high price of the treat, especially considering they’re pretty small compared to the other cheaper options.

Asda’s offering was pretty good value for money, with its own twist on the classic ice cream treat featuring swirled chocolate and vanilla ice cream.

Although I was pretty disappointed when the cone fell apart in my hand as I was tucking in. Not ideal and a little messy.

Overall it was pleasant enough and a relatively good price.

Tesco

  • £1.50 a pack
  • Four per pack

Tesco has also opted for a chocolate swirl for its desert cone, with a chocolatey sauce running through the ice cream.

The taste however was not as nice as the others, the chocolate was a bit too plain – slightly like cooking chocolate rather than sweet.

It was the same for the choccy nib at the base of the cone too.

Tesco’s price was slightly more expensive, the highest price for a four-pack that we tried.

Aldi

  • £1.19 a pack
  • 4 per pack
  • 30p per ice cream

I am a big fan of Aldi‘s own-brand Giannis ice cream, its low calorie tubs are a personal favourite of mine, so I went in with high hopes for the cones.

I wasn’t disappointed – the ice cream was soft and light, quite like a Mr Whippy consistency.

Aldi too have a mixture of both chocolate and vanilla in its cones and the flavours of both paired well together.

The nib within the cone was also tasty and it was the cheapest we tested for a four-pack.

Iceland

  • £1.50 a pack
  • Six per pack
  • 25p per ice cream
Iceland was my winner with a pack of six costing just £1.50

Iceland was my winner with a pack of six costing just £1.50

Iceland tasted just like the real thing, if not better.

The treat itself was similar to Aldi and resembled soft-serve, and was also really creamy too.

I felt it had just the right amount of chopped nuts on top, not too overpowering but also adding a crunch.

The deciding factor though was definitely the price. For a pack of six it only cost £1.50 – that’s half the price of the same size of Cornettos.

It makes them perfect for families on a budget, if you ask me.

Overall it was the winner for me.

Morrisons followed the same style as the other dupes, also swirling both chocolate and vanilla together within the cone.

I wasn’t overly keen on the taste of the chocolate ice cream but it was improved by the addition of chocolate sauce in its centre.

Another thing I noticed was that the choccy nib in the cone came up much higher than in the others, meaning there was ever so slightly less ice cream to tuck into.

Price-wise it matched with Asda for a four-pack, not the highest but not the cheapest either.

We have also tested supermarket own-brand Soleros and the winner cost half the price of the real thing.

Plus, we tried instant latte sachets including Starbucks and Nescafe – and a 95p supermarket dupe was better.
