A TUB of Ben & Jerry’s is the ultimate night-in treat.

But with a sharing tub now setting you back nearly a fiver, it’s a luxury few of us can afford.

Lynsey tests different cookie dough ice creams

As The Sun’s Squeeze Team consumer expert Martyn James said: “While people understand the cost of making ice cream is increasing, we don’t deserve to be ripped off.”

A few supermarkets are offering copycat cookie dough ice creams at a fraction of the price.

But are they as good?

We asked mum-of-three Lynsey Hope, 40, from West Malling, Kent, to find out.

Lynsey says: “This is filled with cookie dough and delicious dark chocolate chunks. The ice cream was delicious too, light and creamy.

“You could buy nearly three tubs for the same price as the famous brand – it’s actually the cheapest of the bunch.

“It’s a great budget option and you are not compromising on taste. Buy it, while stocks last.”

Lynsey says: “Loved Asda’s Cookie Dough ice cream. You could barely tell the difference between this and Ben and Jerry’s – but it’s less than HALF the price.

“It’s even beats Lidl on price and honestly you can’t argue on the taste. You could serve this up to unsuspecting guests or kids and no one would know the difference.

“I’ll never spend more on a tub of ice cream again. Great job Asda.”

Ben and Jerry’s is a household name

Lynsey says: “A lovely rich and creamy ice cream with lots of chocolate chip cookie dough and chocolate chunks.

“It’s one of the unhealthiest with 22g sugar per serving (more than the own brands) but that is likely due to the generosity of the fillings. It’s milky which I liked.

“The only downside is the price. Not many of us can afford to shell out £4.80 on a tub of ice cream any more. It’s not huge.

“Most couples would scoff this in one night and it’s not big enough for a family. It’s too expensive – and there are alternatives which taste just as good.”

“Less than half the price of Ben & Jerry’s but rather underwhelming.

“It didn’t contain anywhere near as many chunks of cookie dough as the famous brand and the ice cream was a little too soft and runny.

“It tastes alright, quite sweet though actually a little healthier per scoop, but nothing to write home about.”
