IT’S the classic after dinner treat to round off a meal, but do you need to splash out on brand leader After Eight’s famous gooey fondant-filled chocs?
At £2.50 for 300g, they are far from cheap, with a thin chocolate outer layer that is only 47 per cent cocoa solids.
To see how supermarket rivals compare, Laura Stott rated a selection for taste, quality and value, giving marks out of ten.
After Eight’s Score: 4/10
Tesco Dark Chocolate Mint Thins
180g, £1.25, Tesco
WITH a naff green box I didn’t have high hopes for these – but they were an unexpected triumph.
Inside, the mints were outstanding.
The Rainforest Alliance-approved dark outer contained 65 per cent cocoa solids for great flavour and was substantial enough to provide a satisfying snap when you bite.
The mint inner wasn’t as sweet as the brand leader, which I liked, and had a nice fresh flavour.
Top chocs and exceptional value.

Asda Dark Chocolate Mint Thins
180g, £1.20, Asda
THESE top-value treats were the cheapest 180g box, making them a real bargain.
You get a very tasty after dinner mint for your money, too.
These contain 65 per cent cocoa solids, so it’s a quality dark chocolate outer, and the fondant had a good texture.
The choc is thicker than After Eights, but when it’s this tasty then it’s good. Delicious.

Morrisons Dark Chocolate Mints
180g, £1.50, Morrisons
THESE thins contain 65 per cent cocoa solids, so you get a decent snap of dark chocolate with a lovely flavour.
The chocolate-to-mint ratio is perfect if you prefer more choccy and a less saccharine taste.
But if you like a minty hit, you might not find it here.
I liked the stylish pack, too.
Very nice, and a big saving compared to After Eights, but pricier than others.

Peppermint Creams
150g, £3, Marks & Spencer
THIS gorgeous art deco-style turquoise green packet of peppermint creams is so stylish it makes your mouth water before you’ve even opened it.
Luckily, the contents live up to the beautiful box.
Delicious dark chocolate with 70 per cent cocoa solids make it the best covering of the whole test.
The fondant is perfect and smells like fresh mint. You also get far more than in the others.
A bit pricey but the choc is top notch.

Choceur Mint Waves
125g, £1.75, Aldi
A SLIGHTLY different after dinner style from Aldi, these thins combine minty freshness and choccie flavour in one crispy thin layer, which are perfect for popping into your mouth after a big meal – or just scoffing in front of the telly.
Quite pricey compared to some others, but you do get a lot of choc snaps for your spend.
The chocolate is good quality and you get plenty of flavour with rice-puff crunch.
They are very morish – you can’t stop at one.

Mister Choc Mint Thins
125g, £1.79, Lidl
ANOTHER cheap-looking box that contains some surprisingly good choccies.
These slivers are made with 57 per cent cocoa solid dark chocolate and use natural mint flavouring instead of peppermint oil for a lovely fresh taste.
Another to combine everything in one solid morsel, so there’s no oozing fondant.
But you do get a very good mint choc with a crunch from crispy rice pieces, at a value price.
