ALDI’S Nutella dupe recently went viral on Twitter as shoppers pointed out it looks almost identical to the original.

Fans said not only did it look alike, but it tastes the same and costs a fraction of the price.

Lynsey Hopr put Nutella to the test against supermarket own brands

Many supermarkets now sell their own brand chocolate hazelnut spreads and all of them are cheaper than the famous brand.

But which will most delight the taste buds and save you some pennies?

I tried them all to find out.

Nutella has a legion of fans but is expensive

The smooth, gooey hazelnut taste of Nutella is instantly recognisable.

It has a lovely consistency and is easy to slather over toast or pancakes.

It has a lovely nutty flavour thanks to its 13% hazelnut content and hint of vanilla.

It is very sweet – the jar warns just one teaspoon contains 80 calories – and it’s a shame it contains palm oil.

Extremely expensive – costing at least 40p more than most of the own brands – but it does taste delicious.

Aldi has taken on Nutella to offer better value

The name of Aldi‘s ‘Nutoka’ spread gave me a little chuckle – the design of the jar is almost identical to the famous brand too.

It is hard to tell any difference in taste to be honest.

It has a slightly nuttier taste than Nutella, but I thought this was a good thing.

It made it nicer and less sweet. The ingredients are virtually identical with 13% hazelnuts and it does contain palm oil. Amazing value.

Sainsbury’s spread is dangerously delicious

Dangerously delicious, I couldn’t stop tasting it and I had lots of volunteers happy to take a spoonful.

The ingredients are almost identical with the same quantity of hazelnuts and cocoa powder.

Sainsbury’s spread does contain palm oil but from sustainable sources so it’s a good eco-choice.

The balance between the chocolate and the creamy nutty flavour was spot on. The texture was good and the aroma was very enticing.

Better than the big brand but with a huge cost-saving.

Tesco’s spread is a little bit rich

Darker in colour than many of others with a very sugary and sweet taste.

It has a richer and more intense taste and was probably my least favourite.

Like many others, Tesco‘s does contain palm oil. Even though it was thick, it did spread easily and it is still far cheaper than Nutella.

Lidl’s offering is a bargain

Less than half the price of Nutella, this spread from Lidl is a bargain.

You pay 61p less and get twice as much in the jar – and those savings will add up if you get through a lot.

Taste-wise the two are hardly any different with the colour and consistency almost identical.

It does contain palm oil but mixed with rapeseed and sunflower oils.

For the price, this definitely hit the sweet spot.

Waitrose’s spread was not as sweet as Nutella

Great that Waitrose have chosen to use sustainable palm oil.

It doesn’t taste as sweet as Nutella and the hazelnut flavour was stronger but it was all the better for it.

A great price for Waitrose too comparable to most other own brands.

I’d buy this again.

The M&S spread had a hint of vanilla

Not just any spread, this is an M&S chocolate spread – and it’s really quite yummy.

It’s luxurious and creamy with a hint of bourbon vanilla.

It has a lovely smooth texture and no palm oil.

It’s expensive but still cheaper per 100g than the big brand and you get a nice big jar.

I found it easy to spread and moreish.

Asda’s spread has a balanced flavour

Slightly thicker in consistency than Nutella but still easy to gloop out of the jar on a spoon.

It has a nutty – not too sweet – flavour with a chocolatey aroma and nicely balanced flavour.

Asda‘s version is a bit higher in fat than Nutella and also contains palm oil, but for the price, I’ve no complaints.

Morrions spread won the test

Morrisons‘ spread looked really rich and glossy. It was very sweet with a rich nutty flavour – delicate and yet indulgent at the same time.

Comes in a bit cheaper than most and at the moment, every penny counts. I loved this own brand spread.

It scored ten out of ten from me and was my winner. I will be stocking up.

Overall verdict

I’m a total convert. I’ve always bought Nutella in the past but having tasted all these delicious alternatives, I feel it’s a rip off.

Nearly all of these own brands tasted good and you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference for most.

I won’t be wasting money on the brand name any more.

Morrisons’ was my favourite but Aldi, Lidl Sainsbury’s and Waitrose were all up there too. Delicious.
