CRISPS are a must-have during most weekends, but which supermarket does Christmas flavours the best?

The Sun has put the major supermarkets to the test to find out which own-brand goods are the best quality for the price.

This time, it’s the turkey flavour and pigs in blankets flavour crisps on offer at Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Aldi and Lidl.

We gave each one a score out of ten.

And we also gave a score out of ten for value, based on the price per 100g and what you got for your money.

Here’s how all the crisps scored out of 20 overall:

Tesco’s Christmas crisps were a mixed experience.

There wasn’t much of a sausage or bacon taste to the pigs in blankets version – instead they tasted more like burnt tomato.

The turkey crisps tasted very similar to roast chicken, but the addition of “butter” gave them a richness which tasted a bit like cheese and onion.

They cost 90p per 100g, which was middle-of-the-range.

Asda’s turkey crisps were surprisingly delicious.

They really did taste just like a roast turkey dinner with a sage and herb stuffing. We could eat these crisps all year round.

The pigs in blankets version wasn’t quite as good. They tasted unusually sweet – a bit like maple-syrup covered bacon.

Like Tesco, Asda’s crisps also cost 90p per 100g.

  • Taste: Pigs in Blankets – 6/10, Turkey – 9/10
  • Value: 6/10
  • Total: Pigs in Blankets – 12/20, Turkey – 15/20

The turkey crisps from Morrisons were quite bland and the meat flavouring tasted more like BBQ beef than turkey.

We were also unimpressed with the pigs in blankets version.

The only strong flavour in them was paprika – otherwise they were bland without much of a hint of bacon or sausage.

They cost a whopping £1.08 per 100g, making them the most expensive crisps we tried.

  • Taste: Pigs in Blankets – 5/10, Turkey – 6/10
  • Value: 5/10
  • Total: Pigs in Blankets – 10/20, Turkey – 11/20

Sainsbury’s

  • £1.50 for 150g

The Sainsbury’s Christmas crisps were the second most expensive we tried, costing £1 per 100g. But sadly they didn’t live up to the price.

The turkey crisps were thick, crunchy and had a cinnamon smell but that was where the festive joy ended.

They didn’t taste of much and were pretty bland.

And we couldn’t finish the pigs in blanket crisps.

They tasted like sausage which had been badly burnt on a BBQ, which gave them an acrid aftertaste. One to avoid.

  • Taste: Pigs in Blankets – 4/10, Turkey – 6/10
  • Value: 5/10
  • Total: Pigs in Blankets – 9/20, Turkey – 11/20

This year, Aldi has mixed things up by offering turkey and chorizo flavour crisps as a twist on the traditional roast dinner flavour.

We had high hopes for these crisps but were disappointed.

They were very spicy and sweet but otherwise didn’t taste of much.

And they had an odd off-putting smell which reminded us of the smell of raw meat. We wouldn’t rush to eat these again.

But the pigs in blankets version was a pleasant surprise.

We couldn’t really taste sausage but they had a great bacon taste – a bit like Frazzles – and were thick cut and crunchy.

At just 77p per 100g, these were a bargain.

  • Taste: Pigs in Blankets – 7/10, Turkey – 4/10
  • Value: 8/10
  • Total: Pigs in Blankets – 15/20, Turkey – 12/20

Lidl

We couldn’t really taste turkey in the Lidl crisps but they did have a strong sage herb flavour.

Bizarrely, we felt the pigs in blankets crisps tasted more like turkey dinner. They had a distinctive roast chicken flavour.

They were nice crisps, but didn’t taste anything like bacon or sausages so lost points for that.
