ROAST potatoes are a stable of a good Sunday lunch.

Crispy on the outside and light and fluffy on the inside, the humble spud is delicious especially when drizzled in gravy.

There’s nothing quite like a homemade roastie, but can a premade one ever compare?

We asked mum-of-three Lynsey Hope, 41, from West Malling, to try out some supermarket own brands to see how they fared.

Lynsey says: “When I shopping for these, I noticed there was a huge variation in price when buying frozen roasties so I’m interested to see how they taste.”

Here, she reveals her favourites:

  • Cooking time: 35 minutes

Lynsey says: “Fluffy in the middle, these crisped up beautifully giving you a delicious roastie.

“Given all the time and effort that goes into making your own, these are a great ready-made alternative and I wish I’d found them sooner.

“Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either. A real treat from Sainsbury’s.”

Lynsey says: “Iceland’s spuds looked lovely, very uniform with a golden brown, crisp coating.

“My guests enjoyed the creamy, buttery middle when I served them up for dinner and there was just the right amount of seasoning.

“These are one of Iceland’s more luxury items and so not as cheap as other supermarkets, but definitely worth a few more pennies.”

  • 95p, 95p per kg
  • Cooking time: 39 minutes

Lynsey says: “The best value roasties we tried – equal to the Tesco price per kg.

“They looked rather yellow before going in the oven but they crisped up well, taking around 39 minutes in the oven. They did keep their yellow tinge but they had a lovely crunch and the inside didn’t disappoint.

“A good size bag too. For the price, I was impressed.”

Lynsey says: “Nice and even in size, these cooked well in the oven and air fryer.

“They didn’t have as much flavour as a homemade spud but they were at least as good as the branded options and a really amazing price. I’d buy more.”

Lynsey says: “These had a great flavour and they crisped up well in the recommended 35 minute cooking time. One of the best we tried.

“The skin did look a little pasty and pale – which is the only reason they didn’t win – but the taste was pretty decent. They had a nice balance of crunchiness versus fluffiness.

“For a quick option, these were good.”

Delicious, but not quite a bargain

  • £2.59, £2.59 per 1kg
  • Cooking time: 30 to 35 minutes

Lynsey says: “Not the bargain you’d expect from Lidl, but these were delicious.

“The goose fat gave these potatoes lots of flavour and they were beautifully crispy on the outside. If anything, just a tiny bit too hard.

“They were a nice colour though and the centre was fluffy and soft just as it should be.”

  • Cooking time: 25 minutes

Lynsey says: “At first glance, these potatoes didn’t look great coming out of the bag. Some had brown patches on them.

“These cooked much quicker than many of the own brands and I was surprised when they came out with a lovely golden colour in 25 minutes.

“The inside though wasn’t as fluffy as I would have liked. Nothing impressive given the price.”

Lynsey says: “After an hour in the oven, these were still quite hard. I struggled to get a knife through them.

“The sizes were quite mixed, some were very small. There was zero crunch and I didn’t like the flavour.
