THE sad news that Nestle will discontinue the beloved Caramac bar after 60 years has rocked the nation.
The chocolatier confirmed it made the “difficult decision” to discontinue that caramel-flavoured bar due to low sales.

A standard 30g Caramac bar would have set you back about 75p in most stores, but they will soon disappear forever.
Fans were devastated upon hearing the news with many wondering where they would go for that Caramac distinctive caramel buttery flavour.
So we scoured the supermarket shop shelves to find the closest available dupe for the best price – here are the results

There is nothing quite like the authentic taste of Caramac bar.
Made from condensed milk, butter, various flavourings and sugar and at 30g per bar they’re meant to be consumed solo.
The popular bar is often described as having a unique butterscotch-like flavour.
However, some fans have speculated that the recipe has changed over the years and I would agree. The bar I tasted was very grainy and bland.

Cadbury’s Caramilk

Many choc fans reckon this Cadbury bar is the closest thing to the Caramac bar on shop shelves and I have to agree.
This bar was delicious, much creamier and chunkier plus it melts nicely in your mouth.
I may even go so far as to say this is better than the Caramac bar.
The only drawback is that it’s pricier. But as it tastes nicer I think it’s worth the extra money.

Nestle’s Milkybar Gold

Milkybars are also produced by Nestle, so you would think they may taste similar but actually that couldn’t be further from the truth.
The Milkybar has an almost malty flavour but the taste of white chocolate overpowers almost everything else.
Definitely one for fans of blondies (brownies made from white chocolate) but not great if you are looking for a Caramac dupe.

McVities Gold

We’re branching out slightly into biscuit territory with this one, but I can see why the little bars come in such small sizes.
These really pack a punch and are incredibly sweet, maybe even too sweet, but they do have the lowest price point.
I wouldn’t say this bar comes very close to the Caramac bar, it’s definitely a chocolate that would go well with a nice cup of tea.

Munchies Gold

This may be the closest thing on the market to finding a dupe as the chewable chocolates are made with real Caramac.
However, I don’t think the Caramac actually pulls through in this case.
The biscuits and Caramel inside each munchie is the most predominant flavour so you don’t really get that taste of Caramac.
These might taste a little better if you store them in the fridge that way the chocolate takes a little longer to melt in your mouth.
