AS winter sets in, there’s nothing better than a bit of comfort food.
And a fish pie is just the ticket, thanks to its cheesy potato topping and fishy centre.
While they are often expensive when ordered in a restaurant, the supermarkets have made fish pies much more affordable.
Hayley Minn tucked in to see which were fin-tastic and which finished in bottom plaice, with ratings out of five.
ASDA MEAL FOR ONE FISH PIE
400g, £3 (or 3 for £7.50)
THE flavours in Asda’s fish pie were lovely and cheesy – and, of course, fishy, thanks to the pollock and haddock.

There’s a solid amount of fish in here, which makes it good value for money.
My only criticism is that it could do with a touch more seasoning – although it’s easy to get the balance right if you add your own.

SAINSBURY’S FISH PIE
400g, £3.25 (£2.25 with Nectar)
Most read in Money
THE Cheddar cheese, pollock and hake in Sainsbury’s fish pie were all delicious with strong flavours – and the mashed potato was extra-fluffy.
I loved the parsley crumb on top, too – it gave a lovely bite to the sauce.
And with Sainsbury’s current offer making it very cheap, what’s not to love?

TESCO FISH PIE
400g, £3.25 (3 for £7.50 with Clubcard)
I WAS very disappointed with Tesco’s fish pie, as I could barely taste the pollock in the filling.
It tasted more like mashed potato, if I’m honest – although this part was quite nice, as it was very buttery and fluffy.
This fish pie was the least calorific of all the pies I tried, and I think you could tell.

ICELAND FISH PIE
300g, £1
ICELAND’S fish pie is the cheapest by far – although you do get less for your money, with it being just 300g.
Due to its price, I was very surprised by how tasty and creamy it was, with a decent amount of pollock filling, too – probably an equal amount to the mashed potato.
It could have done with a bit more seasoning, but great value.

LIDL DELUXE FISH PIE
400g, £3.49
WITH this being from Lidl’s premium range, it was actually one of the more expensive pies I tried – but it was the only one that included famously pricey prawns, which meant it really did have an advantage over the others.
The filling was so tasty, as was the ciabatta crumb on top. It was seasoned perfectly.
A real treat, and the only downside was the price.

CO-OP TRADITIONAL FISH PIE
400g, £3.80 (or 2 for £6)
I LOVED the fishy flavours coming from the pollock in Co-op’s fish pie, and this was one of the cheesier ones I tried, too.
But the ratio of fish to potato was a bit off, with not as much mash as I’d like.
I also had to add a bit of water to make it less dry when I took it out of the microwave.

WAITROSE CLASSICS FISH PIE
400g, £3.50
THE fancy piping on Waitrose’s fish pie makes it look a lot more appealing than some of the others, and the sauce and potato on top were delicious.
But the filling let it down, unfortunately.
While I got a strong hit of cheese, the haddock and pollock were very smoky and quite dry.
